CITY OF MEDELLIN
FROM DARKNESS TO LIGHT
The city of Medellin, Colombia, has suffered for generations from the dark and bloody cocaine legacy of Pablo Escobar. The citizens are weary of their home being known as the “most dangerous place on Earth.” They are disturbed by the increase of “narco-tourism” generated by the many TV shows trending on this theme. They decided as a population to actively work together to reinvent this image. A multifaceted plan to bring about positive change through gentrification, the arts, wellness initiatives, eco-tourism and more was created and is in the process of being implemented. I was invited to be an advisor on a panel focused on creating “conscious spaces” and “uplifting events” that would foster wellness in all communities.

Concept & Solution
I met with a panel focused on creating “conscious spaces” and “conscious gatherings” where people could exercise, create, dance, meditate and participate in activities that would elevate their consciousness in a safe environment.
I consulted with a team of architects and urban planners to advise them about creating such environments and events. We brainstormed and came up with several goals to implement in future projects that would benefit citizens as a whole by creating free resources to change lives.
I worked with teachers, spiritual practitioners, wellness leaders, business owners, to advise them on creating wellness programs for people of all ages and walks of life. We initiated several goals to implement in future projects that would help people take active steps in improving their quality of life.
outcome
Medellin has been wildly successful in this endeavor, due to their intense commitment and huge hearts. The city has won many awards over the last years for their innovations in art, architecture, employee wellness programs, tourism initiatives, economic programs and more. A highlight was recently winning an award for being recognized as “the most progressive city on Earth.” Also, Medellin has become so safe and attractive that is it now the top tourist destination for South Americans. What has been accomplished is incredible, and there is still more to come. I feel blessed to have played a small role in such a wonderful transformation of the human spirit.
